Legal Interpretation in State Courts: Judicial Perspectives

Questions of legal interpretation – of how courts determine what constitutions, statutes, or regulations mean – are commonplace in discussions of federal law. State-level legal interpretation typically receives far less attention, even though state courts decide many more cases than federal courts. This panel will feature four state high court judges from Wisconsin and across the country to explore interpretive questions. The discussion will explore difficult interpretive issues that state courts face, how state approaches to interpretation might differ from federal approaches, and aspects of state law that warrant greater attention.

This event was held both physically at the UW Madison Law School in Room 7200 and virtually on Friday, November 18th from 3:00-4:30PM. The event was approved for 1.5 Wisconsin CLE Credits.
