The State Democracy Research Initiative and the People’s Parity Project invite you to join a virtual panel, “Understanding Judicial Ethics Enforcement.” This event will take place on Thursday, November 21, from 12:00-1:00pm Central Time. Please register for this Zoom webinar at the link below. This panel is approved for 1 Wisconsin Ethics CLE credit.
Every state has a judicial conduct commission designed to protect the public against judicial misconduct. These entities receive little attention, but they play an important role in maintaining ethical requirements within state courts. At the same time, as state courts have become a battleground for high-profile legal issues like redistricting and abortion, state judicial ethics enforcement mechanisms have themselves become sources of conflict. This panel will provide an overview of recent judicial ethics disputes and developments across the country, including in Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, and it will discuss potential reforms to ensure the fair and effective enforcement of judicial conduct rules. Our panelists will include Billy Corriher (People’s Parity Project), Bryna Godar (State Democracy Research Initiative), and Al Smith (Montana Trial Lawyers Association). This panel will be moderated by Professor Miriam Seifter (State Democracy Research Initiative).
